@mrdudelz it was the over way round lol they dunked them for 5 10 mins and if they were still alive u wer nt a witch lol u wer dead ever way lol
It may seem fun for fairs and stuff today. But when they did this in the 17th century, they actually held the woman underwater for about five or ten minutes and if she was still alive when they pulled her up she was a witch.
i went to go and watch that one- shame the alnwick fair isnt on anymore, the water wasnt always that clean . . .

do they really dunk the girls all the way…I can’t tell if her head is going all the way or if her hair is just getting splashed by residule. Either way, I would love to do this in America.

I think the original idea was that it was a costumed event- and as such the people were ducked whilst in costume. More recently, as someone has already mentioned, they just selected volunteers and gave them a costume to wear. Towards the end (2006) loads of people were getting dunked in normal clothes or just jumping in the tank as part of (or after) their acts, often in normal clothes. Sort of ruined the theme a bit.
haha, this has been running so long! My 35 year old friend was dunked when she was 16! Can’t believe she volunteered to to that.
It is quite a while since i looked at these,and it just amazes me how popular they are,men do love seeing a girl get wet,Alnwick Fair was great fun ,i went there three years running and no one ever got hurt,and the victims seemed to enjoy it too,it was just like a week long carnival,and i suspect a few old scores were settled on that ducking stool, i would post more but the quality on you tube is very poor

haha..I’m originaly from Shilbottle..but live in Acklington now..see some great alnwick fairs but as you get older it became an excuse to go out and get drunk.
im not sure about her, but they used to give u a dress to wear, like a victorian dress of some sort
so did you want to do it or did they pull you out of a crowd of people? this woman seemed to be a little overdressed for a ducking.

From what I’ve heard its a mix of volunteers and random girls they picked out – but don’t worry, I’m sure if you don’t want to play they let you off.
